The execution of the Magazine Warehouse (explosives storage) construction is one of the most critical and challenging infrastructure projects in the mining industry. Blasting operations require specialized storage facilities designed with uncompromising safety standards, both in terms of structural integrity and environmental isolation. Recently, our team of experts successfully completed this large-scale project for PT Multi Tambangjaya Utama (MUTU). This vital project, located in Swalang, North Barito Regency, Central Kalimantan, was completed with high precision and absolute compliance with national safety regulations.
The construction of this facility in the PT MUTU mining area aims to centralize the storage of explosives—such as ANFO, dynamite, and detonators—in a strategic location. This area has been ensured to meet the minimum safety distance from active mining operational facilities, in accordance with safety guidelines from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM).
The Magazine Warehouse Construction project was executed over a period of 210 working days. Given its high strategic value and the accompanying safety risks, the execution of this project was backed by highly professional managerial and financial instruments. This is evidenced by the issuance of an Advance Payment Bond and a Performance Bond. To explore our capabilities in handling other mining infrastructures, please visit our Mining EPC Services page.
Building an explosives storage facility is vastly different from constructing a standard logistics warehouse. This project demands strict integration between heavy-duty civil works, functional architecture, and advanced electrical systems. Below is the breakdown of the 6 (six) main stages of the Scope of Work that we have completed, achieving 100% progress:
The topographical conditions in Swalang, Central Kalimantan, present challenges typical of forest and mining areas. The preparation stage began with a precise topographic survey, followed by land clearing. Earthworks (cut and fill) were executed extensively to achieve the site elevation required by the engineering design. We also built temporary facilities (site office), inspection access roads for heavy vehicles, and implemented a regional drainage system to keep the work area free from standing water throughout the construction period.
The most essential safety feature in a Magazine Warehouse Construction project is the retaining wall or safety embankment (earth mound / bund wall). These walls are built surrounding the main warehouse building. Their function is not merely to prevent soil erosion, but to serve as an energy-absorbing barricade.
In the event of an unexpected explosion (accidental detonation), the retaining wall structure, constructed with precise thickness and inclination angles, is designed to deflect the shockwave upwards (into the air). This system minimizes the horizontal damage radius that could endanger nearby residential areas or surrounding infrastructure.
The main warehouse building is the operational pulse of this project. The compartments inside the building are strictly and specifically separated (an absolute separation between the detonator storage bunker and the ammonium nitrate/ANFO storage room).
The civil works specifications for this area utilize cutting-edge materials. The warehouse floor is designed with anti-static epoxy flooring to eliminate the potential for sparks caused by static electricity from workers’ footwear. A cross-ventilation system was installed based on accurate thermal calculations to keep the room temperature cool and stable, while simultaneously preventing the accumulation of hazardous gases. Meanwhile, the main warehouse doors utilize solid steel with a multi-layered double-locking system approved by police authorities.
Access control is a non-negotiable aspect of operating vital facilities. We built the Administration Office and Security Post directly at the entry point, outside the safety embankment perimeter. This functional building serves as the center for entry permit checks, an inventory recording room (monitoring the incoming and outgoing traffic of explosives), and the central CCTV control point. The area is equipped with an automatic boom gate and a double perimeter fencing system to deter intrusions by unauthorized parties.
To ensure constant visual surveillance 24 hours a day, we erected a Guard Tower with heavy-duty structural steel specifications. The height of this tower was meticulously calculated to provide security personnel with a wide, 360-degree field of view over the entire magazine perimeter as well as the outer edge of the forest. The tower is equipped with long-range searchlights, radio communication devices connected directly to the mine center, and a sturdy weather-resistant roof to protect on-duty personnel from extreme weather.
MEP works in Magazine Warehouse facilities must meet operational compliance standards well above normal limits. The slightest short circuit could trigger a disaster. The scope of MEP expertise we applied includes:
Lightning Protection System: Installation of an electrostatic lightning protection system (Faraday Cage) featuring a comprehensive umbrella radius to block lightning strikes directed at the warehouse area.
Grounding System: Creation of a dual grounding system with extremely low resistance values (below 1 Ohm) to ensure stray current surges and static electricity are immediately neutralized into the ground.
Explosion-Proof Electrical: Lighting fixtures, panels, and all switch points utilize Explosion-Proof (Ex-d) specified devices that are gas-tight and guaranteed 100% spark-proof.
Plumbing & Fire Extinguishers: Installation of a hydrant network, rapid drainage systems, and strategically placed Fire Extinguishers (APAR) along evacuation routes in accordance with mandatory mining area reach distances.
The completion of the Magazine Warehouse Construction project in Swalang, Central Kalimantan, within a timeframe of 210 working days is concrete proof of our company’s reliability in leading high-risk EPC projects. The perfect synergy between technical engineering accuracy, a rigid HSE management system, and guaranteed corporate financial capacity has successfully materialized PT MUTU’s explosives storage facility to operate with a maximum safety margin.
This facility is now ready to support the efficiency of daily mining blasting operations, while providing complete protection for thousands of workers in the sector.
