A boiler is a closed vessel through which air or other liquid flows, the resulting steam or steam, hot steam, or a combination thereof, under pressure or vacuum, for external use, by direct application of energy from burning fuel, from electricity or nuclear energy.

BOILER TYPE

There are two types of boilers, namely:

Fire tube boiler

Hot flue gases flow in a tube submerged in water in the shell.

  • Pressure up to about 10 bar.
  • up to 14 tons of steam/hour.
  • Can cope with a wide load of loads and because of the large air volume.
  • Usually rated in HP.

Advantages :

  • Lower initial cost
  • A little control
  • Simple operation

Deficiency :

  • The drum is exposed to heat, increasing the risk of explosion.
  • Large air volume, resulting in poor circulation.
  • limited pressure and evaporation.

Air tube boiler

Air flows through a tube surrounded by hot gas inside the shell.

  • Usually rated in tons of steam/hour
  • Used for H.P. steam
  • High capacity

Advantages :

  • Fast heat transmission
  • fast reaction to steam demand
  • High efficiency
  • Safer than firetube boilers

Deficiency :

  • More control than fire tube boiler
  • Higher start-up costs
  • More complicated to operate
